Sebastian Krüger

One of the most well known caricaturists in the world is German born 'personality portrait' artist, Sebastian Krüger. His original works sell worldwide for hundreds of thousands of dollars. I remember being utterly wowed when I first encountered his work.

So it seemed appropriate to choose him as the subject for this month's Caricature Jam over at the Drawing Board forums. To caricature the master is the least his fellow caricaturists (and loyal subjects) can do, all the while on our knees chanting, 'We're not worthy! We're not worthy!'

Above is my contribution to the jam. It was an experiment made in Photoshop using lasso cuts and one of my many custom Photoshop brushes. You can download them for free here.

Gorrie and gorier

A couple of new sketches. The first is a caricature of Canadian caricaturist, Sam Gorrie who I had the pleasure of meeting and hanging out with during her stay in Sydney, Australia. As you can see she was very excited about seeing the koalas.

The second sketch is a little bit gory, so if you're not squeamish and want to see the uncropped image just click the thumbnail below. It was done for a Drawing Jam over at The Drawing Board, where each month everyone draws from a few select model poses. This was my interpretation of one of the photos.

Self serving

I figured I'd try and squeeze at least one post in before the end of September. Been busy, busy with work and haven't had much time (or energy) to draw for myself...but I did get the opportunity instead, to draw myself. This self portrait was done for the monthly challenge over at RedBubble. It was inked pretty fast and I ended up getting some good spontaneity with the brushpen. I especially like the dry brush background.

Anyway, hopefully I'll have something more interesting to post next time. For now though, you'll just have to make do with my scruffy, bug-eyed mug.

Shades of grey

Some black and white stuff from the last few weeks.

I came in at the tail end of 'Shark Week' last week and being a big fan of sharks, had to squeeze a drawing in. And who better than the baddest of all sharks, the Great White. Drawn with black coloured pencil, I also experimented a lot with my custom brushes in Photoshop to get some cool textures. I'm thinking of adding some colour to this as well.

Second is a drawing of gaming nerd, Olivia Munn. Done for a Drawing Jam over at The Drawing Board. Graphite.

Lastly is a caricature of the ultra-talented caricaturist, Samuel 'Big Sam' Sellers.

Desktop magazine cover

Back in March I posted some heroes and villains which I drew and helped design for Desktop magazine's CREATE awards. For the upcoming September issue I was invited back to illustrate the superheroes again, this time for their awards flip cover. Thanks to the trusting people over at Desktop I was given a lot of freedom for the cover, so I chose to draw my favourite of the heroes, the tattooed punk chick 'Berangèr' (or as I like to call her, 'Inkstain'). In the tattooey swirl on the right I incorporated symbols which represented all of the other characters, some are obvious and some are pretty obscure (fourteen in all, see if you can identify them).

This was inked once again with my Pentel brush pen and coloured in Photoshop. For the spattery airbrushed colouring I used one of my custom brushes, (#3 in Set 6, which I just discovered was coincidentally titled 'Ink Stain 3'. Ha!). If you haven't checked them out already, you can download my free brushes here.

Also check out here, for the rough, colour comp and pencil stages.

Below is how the issue looks with title and blurb. Currently for sale in Australia all of September.

Michael Jackson

Love, hate, pity or bewilderment...

Whatever you think of the man, there's no denying the impact he's had on popular culture. There's also no denying the extreme physical transformation that Michael underwent in his lifetime...

This was inked using my new toy, the Pentel Brush Pen (synthetic hairs and refillable cartridges. Great!)

Jumping teds, shrunken heads and punk co-eds

WIN a signed 'Jumping Teds' print. Click HERE for details.

Posters and prints now available at my RedBubble store!!

This was done for Rhys McDonald's cheesecake pinup comic, 'Last Call for Sin' which is being released soon down here in Oz.

I make a guest appearance in this pinup as the shrunken head pendant. The inspiration for this piece came from one of my older drawings, DedTedHed.

Inked with felt tip pens (Artlines 0.4, 0.6), with a little bit of brushpen on the hair. Coloured in Photoshop.

Scarlett Johansson

A caricature of actress Scarlett Johannson as she appeared in the movie, 'Girl with a Pearl Earring' (who's movie poster was based on Vermeer's 17th century painting of the same name).

You can see the various transformations my piece went through from initial pencil sketch to finished painting, here.

More Bettie Page art

This is the piece I wanted to create back in December for Bettie Page's tribute but at the time I only managed a simple cartoon. So it's a little late to be a tribute, but anytime's a good time to draw Bettie. Expect more soon.

Here's a link showing the pencils and the halfway stage on the colours.
