Ringu

A digital painting of the creepiest movie monster of all time, Sadako from the Japanese horror film, Ringu (remade in the U.S. as 'The Ring'). I get goosebumps just thinking about it.

This was intended to be a 30 minute digital speedpainting for my sketchblog but I got a bit carried away. Done in PainterX with the Oil Pastel brush, then tweaked in Photoshop with some noise and textures. Here's a link to the PainterX version before any colour tweaks or noise were added in Photoshop.

For anyone sick of the recent spate of crappy Hollywood remakes of Asian horror films, do yourselves a favour and check out the original source material. You won't be disappointed.

19th Feb 2008- Two videos have been added to the tutorials section. One, a digital drawing of Einstein from over at my Sketchblog. The second, has combined my two early girl sketch and colour videos into one. Both have some rockin' tunes to accompany them. Enjoy!

I thought "The Ring" was fine, but the original was great. Nice job freaking me out!

Holy C**p that's awesome work!! Such detail :O) I wish that I had some sort of talent with drawing on the computer but I seem to be having the toughest time.

Gee, thanx for freakin' the poop outta me. I hate that image as it is, you had to go and make it worse with your stark color pallette choice, detailed lower lid (thus making the eye even less human looking), and harsh shadow under the upper lid. All in all, now the image has been re-etched into my fragile psyche as vividly as the first time I saw it. After which, I had to be peeled off the ceiling. Jerk. Seriously though, that is badass, nice job.
P.S. have you seen the prequal, "Ring 0"? Worth checking out.

Thanks mate.

Yeah I decided to go for more gritty realism rather than for it to say 'this is a painting'. That's why I didn't add a signature either.

So good.

I'm a fan of the original movie but I'm also a fan of the American version. Although I'm of the opinion that Ringu stole a lot of its goodness from an American movie called The Changeling, starring George C. Scott. It's one of my favorite horror movies ever.

Ah yes, I recognized that image even before I read your post. Haven't seen the original version yet but the U.S. version was still probably the creepiest movie I've seen. (so i probably won't see the original!) :\

Ha, of course my phone just rang as soon as I typed up that last sentence. I gotta go.
