Quick Question... do you just draw the colour on a layer behind your pencil layer on photoshop to create effects like this?

Yeah, the pencil layer was put on a multiply layer over the colour layer.

nice work. Don't know if you're familiar with the game Starcraft but this kinda looks like an autobot / zerg hybrid.
