The rise and fall of Zero Assassin

One of the most popular anti-heroes to come out of Australian comics in the '90s was a character named Zero Assassin. Originally published in a cyberpunk anthology named Issue One, Zero was the lovechild of comic creator Sam Young. Eventually he was published in his own comic series but unfortunately not long after, the business went bust.

During this time, I came on board as editor of a Zero Assassin anthology, which involved 12 artists and writers teaming up to create 3-page stories about Zero Assassin. The comic was aptly titled, 'Zero to the power of twelve'. The creators involved produced some fantastic work for the book but alas it never saw the light of day, as Issue One comics folded soon after.

Which brings me to my 3-page contribution for the comic. I advise before even reading this short story, that you quickly read up on the character, here. Even then, unless you're a fanatical Zero fan, this text heavy piece is gonna be hard to follow. So just enjoy the pretty pictures...

It's a shame that never went to print, it showed a different view on Zero to what I've read so far.

Reminds me of the old 2000AD Future Shocks (I mean that in a good way) - pity the Zero book didn't ever come out.

Thanks, Hayden, Enrique and Tonia.

Hayden- Yeah, that's a few panels from the editorial page of the comic. I'll have to post it up fully one day.

Hi Demnz

I haven't seen Sam for at least a decade! The last I heard anything about Sam and Issue One was a few years ago when I had a knock on the door and two insurance investigators wanted to find Sam regarding a fire that occured at the Issue One offices a while back.

I have the origianl art of that Zero piece if you're interested in purchasing it. Send me an email at krisvahl@yahoo.com if you want to suggest a price. I haven't any prints of it for sale at the moment though.

Hi Chris, heard about 12 to the power of zero story line but i never saw any artwork until now. Excellent stuff. Pity it never saw the light of day. If we knew where to contact Sam, maybe we could do a collected graphic novel of the stories.

Sorry I missed you at Supanova. Your work just keeps moving in leaps and bounds
